HIGH RISK SMOKERS SHOULD ESPECIALLY CONSIDER FIRE PREVENTION AND NEW PRODUCTS:
According to ongoing studies conducted by the United States Fire Administration (USFA), smokers' carelessness is regularly ranked as the leading cause of death in residential fires. (3) Smokers often become victims of fire by falling asleep while smoking, either in bed or in a favorite chair. This is particularly risky if the smoker has just consumed alcohol or medication. Smokers also risk becoming fire victims when they empty an ashtray into the trash before smoldering cigarette butts are completely extinguished.
Children are an additional risk factor in a smoker's home. Children playing with matches or lighter are a leading cause of home fires and one in which children and others in the household are often hurt. In fact, a quarter of all fire deaths of children are from fires started by children.
The USFA regards smoke detectors as one of the most important fire safety devices for protecting homes against fire. For the best defense of fires, the USFA also recommends that homeowners enlist a monitored fire alarm system to work with a home's smoke detectors. (4)
In addition to having working smoke alarms in their homes, smokers should understand the difference between the two types of smoke alarms, photoelectric and ionization. The most effective smoke detectors available today are those using photoelectric technology. However, the type of detector most commonly found in and around homes in the United States relies on ionization technology.
Ionization detectors sense the smaller, less visible particles of smoke manifested in an actual flame, while photoelectric detectors sense smoke from smoldering fires, the most common type of home fire caused by smokers' accidents. In addition, photoelectric alarms sense smoldering fires up to an hour earlier than ionization technology and are not subject to false alarms from burnt toast or steam from a shower.
In addition to selecting the most effective smoke alarms, smokers may wish to consider getting a monitored system for two reasons: Your home is always protected and you'll enjoy a significant savings on your homeowners insurance.
One of the newest products on the market today is FireArrestJ, a next generation smoke alarm. FireArrestJ is the first wireless, easy to install home fire monitoring system that brings the fire department when a fire is detected.
"Fires go undetected because occupants are asleep, unable to respond or away from home," said Jim Hancock, fire chief for the city of Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. Hancock recommends monitored smoke alarms for extra safety. "If you could prevent a fire, make a fire less damaging, save property, save money on homeowner's insurance and prevent stress and trauma to you and your family, why wouldn't you?"
